"Continuous architecture" doesn't describe a higher review frequency — a monthly committee instead of a quarterly one. It's a change of nature: moving from an architecture audited at intervals to check it still matches reality, to an architecture whose every decision stays permanently connected to what it produced. The difference isn't cosmetic: an architecture audited at fixed points drifts in between, with nobody aware of it until the next audit.

Why the classic review cycle hits its limit

Established frameworks — TOGAF's ADM chief among them — structure architecture into phases with validation gates: vision, business architecture, information systems architecture, opportunities and solutions, governance. That structure remains useful for framing a program. But between two gates, nothing guarantees the decisions taken stay aligned with what actually gets deployed — especially when AI agents can modify a production system in minutes, at a pace no quarterly committee can structurally keep up with.

Two principles that make continuity concrete, not just desirable

TEAF formalizes this continuity through two of the ten principles detailed on the Framework page: Continuous Decision-Making — an architecture decision is a flow that gets re-evaluated with every relevant piece of information, not a gate closed once and for all — and Closed Loop — observation and learning systematically close the cycle back toward the next intent, instead of stopping at execution. Together they describe an architecture that never stops running, rather than one restarted at every review.

The Living ADR: the mechanism, not just the principle

Concretely, this continuity lives in the Living ADR: an architecture decision that stays connected to what produced it, and can be explicitly revised as soon as its conditions change — instead of a document written once, archived, and whose staleness is only discovered at the next audit. That's the difference between a decision that silently expires and one whose drift becomes visible the moment it happens.

Living Architecture: maturity level 5

The seven-level TEAF maturity pyramid pins down precisely what "continuous" means in practice: at level 5, Living Architecture, "the intent → execution → observation → learning loop runs continuously, with governance built in." Levels 0 through 4 describe a progression — from documentary chaos to a connected but still largely manual architecture — that builds toward this continuity without yet reaching it. Level 6, Digital Nervous System, extends it further with AI orchestrating most of the cycle under human supervision.

Measuring continuity rather than declaring it

An architecture doesn't become continuous by being called one: TEAF measures the gap between the pace of tracked decisions and the pace of changes actually deployed through the Governance Speed Index (IVG), already introduced in the enterprise architecture article. A degrading IVG is the most reliable signal that a loop meant to be continuous has actually gone back to running in fits and starts.
